Description
Forty Trumpet Player Duets
by Eddie Lewis
Forty Trumpet Player Duets is the third book in our series of educational trumpet duets. But don’t let the word “educational” fool you. This is genuine music, not just boring, dummied down exercises. This book has forty original trumpet duets for intermediate students.
Good Music at a Narrow Skill Level
When I write music for educational purposes, I invest the same skills and the same level of expressive output for the easier pieces as I do for professional compositions. They are still legitimate pieces of music, but it is written within specific parameters.
The rule I have for myself is that I will never publish a beginner composition that I would be ashamed to include in one of my trumpet albums or to perform on stage in a concert.
In this context, what do I mean by “good music”?
Good music is not only creative, but also well written. When you have creative, well written music, that music tends to be interesting, uplifting, enjoyable and downright FUN! Good music keeps both the audience’s and the musicians’ attention while at the same time giving the trumpet player a challenge to push him forward.
Trumpet Player Skill Level
The Trumpet Player Skill Level is the third level in our system of seven skill levels. It is the first of two intermediate skill levels.
It is possible that some people might think that some of the duets at the back of the Forth Trumpet Player Duets book are too advanced to be labeled as “intermediate”. I understand that. And if we are talking about other skill level systems, then they would be correct.
But no. The duets in this book cover all of the skills that I expect my Trumpet Player Level students to have. They must be able to read confidently in all twelve keys. They must have a reliable range up to G (or G sharp) above the staff. They must be able to play sixteenth notes and some syncopated rhythms.
When you put all of these skills together into one piece of music, the people who do not learn to read fluently in all keys are going to struggle. The trumpet players who avoid sixteenth notes in their practice time are going to have difficulty.
Trumpet Player Assignments
Speaking of skill levels, some of the duets in the Forty Trumpet Player Duets book are not for Trumpet Player Skill Level sight reading. These duets are to be used as musical assignments for these intermediate students.
The book can still be used for sight reading, but only for more advanced trumpet players.
Three Sections
TheĀ Forty Trumpet Player Duets book has three different types of trumpet duets, organized into three sections. The first is the section of what we are calling “keyed duets”. The objective of these duets is to cover all twelve keys while at the same time enjoying the musical landscape. There are twenty of these trumpet duets.
The second section contains the more jazzy trumpet duets. There are six of these jazzy trumpet duets in theĀ Forty Trumpet Player Duets book, including my duet arrangement of When the Saints Go Marching In.
The third section of the book contains more experimental duets. My favorite duets from this section are the four movements from my Critter Suite, a suite of trumpet duets that I wrote for my cats, Brady, Vladdie, Siggie, and Dorrie. In this section are atonal, polytonal and symmetric compositions. The very last duets are composed using my Spider Chord or Love Notes composition technique…which is based on harmonies derived from twelve tone rows.
There are fourteen of these more experimental trumpet duets in the book. These are easily the most difficult duets in the book, but not beyond the reach of an intermediate trumpet student.
The Duets
The duets in this book will eventually all be published here on Tiger Music as individual Compositions. The titles in the list which have links are the ones that are already published individually. We will update this list as we publish the new individual trumpet duets.
