This is the trumpet duet I wrote for Faith Springs Baptist Church for the grand opening of their new sanctuary building. I hired my trumpet friend, Jason Brown, to perform it with me and then we played Christmas duets for the fellowship that was held afterward.

The composition of the duet was based on a description communicated by the church’s pastor, Greg Williams.

Faith Springs Fanfare trumpet duet is number one in our Forty Trumpet Player Duets book. This is a book of intermediate trumpet duets that fit into our Trumpet Player Skill Level. Most of the duets are listed in order of difficulty, except for this Faith Springs Fanfare. I put it first because it’s a fanfare. It’s like saying, “let’s start this duet book on the right note!”

Worth noting is that the sheet music version of this Faith Springs Fanfare trumpet duet has two versions of the fanfare in two different keys. There is the key in which we performed it (key of C), and the key it’s printed in the Forty Trumpet Player Duets book (key of B flat). We put it down a step in the book to make it conform to the parameters of the book.

Trumpet Player Skill Level

As mentioned above, there are two versions of this duet in the sheet music version. The lower version, in the key of B flat, is in our Trumpet Player Skill Level. The version in the key of C is in our Trumpet Apprentice Skill Level.

Of course, the only difference between the different versions is that the highest note has changed. In our skill level system, the top note matters. We want our students to practice music that reaches the top of their current range without passing that range. It is a use it or lose it approach that encourages lots of time in the upper register, but never anything higher than their current skill level.

The two keys in this PDF version of the Faith Springs Fanfare put the top notes in two different skill levels.

Other than range, this short fanfare duet also requires the students to be able to triple tongue. It is very simple triple tongue, the type one would expect from a fanfare.

Practice Suggestions

Here are a few recommendations for working on this trumpet duet of Faith Springs Fanfare.

• Practice the first part down and octave first.
• Practice triple tongue separately before practicing this fanfare.
• Be careful with the rhythms.
  • Dotted-eight/sixteenths should not be in exact rhythm but should be stylistically fanfare-like.
