Peace Hymn for Trumpet Trio
by Eddie Lewis
This Peace Hymn for trumpet trio is a deceptively difficult piece to perform. While it is mostly whole-notes and half-notes, and is only three quarters of a page long, it does demand a great deal of endurance. The long notes also expose any issues the performers might have with phrasing and intonation.
Peace Hymn is a play with chords and simple part writing. It was my first time to compose a piece where the long notes were the feature of the piece. In the earliest renditions of the piece, I tried to be more modern with it. I tried to avoid traditional harmonies and root movements. But that didn’t speak to me the way this does.
As I said earlier, the compositions looks deceptively simple. Superficially, it looks like an easy to intermediate level piece, but it is really more of an intermediate to advance piece, simply because of the stamina and finesse it takes to perform with proper phrasing at the right tempo.
