Gumbo Magic Brass Quintet with Drums

by Eddie Lewis

I composed Gumbo Magic in the 90’s as a vehicle to feature tubist Dave Kirk with the Texas Brass Quintet. The idea was to write a peace that features the tuba, while never giving him the primary melody. The melody is in all the other instruments of the quintet, but the tuba part is virtuosic throughout.

This was one of the first pieces I composed after I realized that second line music and salsa share the same rhythmic roots. These roots are referred to as “the clave”! The main difference between the two styles is that second music swings, and salsa does not. Not in the sense that we as jazz players call swing.

Gumbo Magic was recorded by the Texas Brass, featuring Dave Kirk, and that recording is available on their album, Sounds of the South.

A Note About the Score

I was unable to find the score for this piece on my hard drive and the PDF I found did not have a score on it at all. What I did have was a printed score in my file cabinet. So, what you will receive in this file is a scan of that hard copy of the original score.

For that reason, the PDF for Gumbo Magic will be quite a bit larger than our other product files.

Gumbo Magic Video

The following video is from the Texas Brass channel on YouTube. This is the official recording of Gumbo Magic.
