Description
His Peace Trumpet Quartet
His Peace was originally a one-page lead sheet that I composed during one of my trips to South Africa. We were in Port Elizabeth which is now called Gqeberha, so the original, unoffical title was “Peace in P.E.” I later changed the title to just Peace.
Fast forward about twenty years, Peace is now one of the tunes my group, Living Rhythms, has performed in concerts and jazz clubs. I pulled it out again to record a video with my friend and bassist, David Craig. You can see that video by clicking the following button:
Peace – David CraigAfter making that video recording, I had an urge to compose a trumpet piece based on the same melody and chords. His Peace trumpet quartet is the end result of that urge.
Form
His Peace trumpet quartet begins with a sostenuto introduction of the theme. Since the theme is already introduced in the introduction, I chose to hit the first variation [C] before restating the main theme [D] in its purest form.
Then comes the second variation [E] leading to a climatic fanfare variation, in major [F] (the rest of the piece is in minor). The second half of the last variation returns to minor and revisits the main theme. The piece ends with a Picardy third beneath a final statement of the opening motif.
