His Peace Trumpet Quartet

By Eddie Lewis

His Peace was originally a one-page lead sheet that I composed during one of my trips to South Africa. We were in Port Elizabeth which is now called Gqeberha, so the original, unoffical title was “Peace in P.E.” I later changed the title to just Peace.

Fast forward about twenty years, Peace is now one of the tunes my group, Living Rhythms, has performed in concerts and jazz clubs. I pulled it out again to record a video with my friend and bassist, David Craig. You can see that video by clicking the following button:

Peace – David Craig

After making that video recording, I had an urge to compose a trumpet piece based on the same melody and chords. His Peace trumpet quartet is the end result of that urge.

Form

His Peace trumpet quartet begins with a sostenuto introduction of the theme. Since the theme is already introduced in the introduction, I chose to hit the first variation [C] before restating the main theme [D] in its purest form.

Then comes the second variation [E] leading to a climatic fanfare variation, in major [F] (the rest of the piece is in minor). The second half of the last variation returns to minor and revisits the main theme. The piece ends with a Picardy third beneath a final statement of the opening motif.

His Peace Trumpet Quartet Skill Level

The skill level for His Peace Trumpet Quartet is the Trumpet Pro skill level. This is the first of three advanced skill levels in our system. The most obvious aspect of the Trumpet Pro skill level is the range. The highest note for this skill level is the famous “High C”.

There are no high Cs in His Peace, but there is one B natural. Other than that, there isn’t a lot of difference between His Peace and a composition at our Trumpet Apprentice skill level.

His Peace Trumpet Quartet Score Video

We have a score video for His Peace trumpet quartet that you can access by clicking HERE. The score video allows you to see and hear the duet before you purchase it.

You can use the score video as a substitute for the play-along video. You can even use it to play the second part. But that’s not what it’s for. It’s meant to give you an opportunity to look at and hear the piece.

His Peace Trumpet Quartet Performance Video

Below is a performance video of our His Peace trumpet quartet arrangement. The purpose of the performance video is so that you can see that the parts are genuinely playable. In our modern times, it is too easy to write music on computers without ever knowing if the music works. We make these live performance videos to demonstrate that the duets are indeed accessible.
