Go Tell It On the Mountain Trumpet and Trombone Duet
Go Tell It On the Mountain is THE original jazzy Christmas song. And how can you have a brass arrangement of it without adding some tailgate trombone to the mix?
Here’s a trumpet and trombone duet arrangement of this classic Christmas spiritual. It starts out with eight bars marked “Hymn like”, and then, with a trombone glissando, the arrangement picks up with a swing feel. The next thirty-two bars are a jazzy Christmas party until, in measure forty-one, we modulate up a half-step to literally “take it up a notch”.
Duets on Trio Gigs
I like to use duet arrangements on trio gigs, mostly to give the musicians at least a little bit of a break. But it also helps to change the texture of the music just a little bit.
On my most recent brass trio gig, I had duets for all three duet combinations. My preferred brass trio instrumentation (now-a-days) is trumpet, trombone, and tuba. So I had duets in the book for trumpet and trombone, trumpet and tuba, and trombone and Tuba.
I wrote this duet arrangement of Go Tell It On the Mountain for that purpose.
Trumpet Apprentice Skill Level
This Go Tell It on the Mountain trumpet and trombone duet arrangement is at an intermediate level, mostly because of the range. In my system of skill levels, this is the fourth of seven levels and we call it the Trumpet Apprentice Skill Level.
The highest note in the trumpet part is written B flat above the staff. The highest note in the trombone part is written A flat.
The arrangement does require a swing feel. If that’s something new to the musicians, than it might be just a little more difficult.
