Here is the new sheet music in our Trumpet Hymn Duet series (Click HERE to see the other duets in this series). This is number 12 in the series. Be Thou My Vision trumpet duet is ideal for your traditional church service. It can be used as a prelude, as offertory music or as communion music.
The idea behind the Trumpet Hymn Duet series is to write trumpet duets that stay very close to the original mood and harmonies of the original hymn. No jazzed up rhythms. No modern harmonies. No tricky compositional techniques to show off my experience as a composer/arranger. These duets are creative, but conservative.
If you look at the other pieces on this website, you will see that I am quite capable of writing modern, difficult, dazzling arrangements and compositions for trumpet ensembles of all sizes. The choice to write simpler arrangements has to do with appropriateness. Church is not a place to “show off your skills”. It’s nice to have skills. The Trumpet Hymn Duets are not skill-less. It took a few decades of experience to get where I could write like that. The point is that I am not using these skills to show off. In these duets, I am using these skills to praise God.
Trumpet Duet Sheet Music Details
Be Thou My Vision is at an intermediate skill level. The duet is two pages long. The highest note in the first part is B flat above the staff. The highest note in the second part is G above the staff.
The most challenging aspect of this piece is breathing, in a stylistic sense. It would be easy to be reckless with your breathing, causing the phrases to sound jolted and interrupt the flow of the melodic line. To facilitate a constant flow over the phrases, I have notated my own breath marks in the parts. I hope they help you navigate the melodies smoothly and beautifully.
