Trumpet Tyro Capers
Easy Trumpet Solo
By Alex Lewis
Trumpet Tyro Capers is an easy trumpet solo that I commissioned from my son, Alex, who actually is a piano player. I’ve been writing trumpet and piano pieces for decades, but I never had the confidence that my piano parts were any good. Hiring Alex to do some of this writing has really helped us out.
Trumpet Tyro Skill Level
The focus of this piano piece is the skill level. I have a grid that spells out the specifics of our seven skill levels and I asked Alex to write some music for our first and second levels. Trumpet Tyro is the second of those seven levels.
What is the Trumpet Tyro skill level?
The top range for a Trumpet Tyro piece is fourth space E. This skill level is also limited to three flats and three sharps and a specific set of time signatures.
One major difference between the first skill level (Trumpet Pioneer) and the Trumpet Tyro skill level is that that the Trumpet Tyro music will have eighth-notes. Trumpet Pioneer music doesn’t have eighth-notes.
Capers Style
The feel of Trumpet Tyro Capers is in that old silent movie style. It’s an expressive style that gives the beginner trumpet student an opportunity to perform something that says something. It speaks. It has drama.
I try to write trumpet sheet music for beginners that I would be proud to perform in public. I feel that Alex has carried this philosophy forward with Trumpet Tyro Capers. This is a real piece of music that just happens to be limited in skill. In fact, the demo video for this piece was taken from a recital at the church where Alex is the music director.
Trumpet Tyro Capers Demo Video
Here is a video recording of Trumpet Tyro Capers being performed live by Alex and myself. This was part of a recital program we put together that featured our collaborative work. We included two of our compositions for beginners for that reason. It is not as easy to write music for beginner trumpet students as it is to perform those pieces. The recital also gave us an opportunity to share video like this. We believe that this kind of demonstration is the best, because there are no edits. This is really what the music sounds like.
