Description
Trumpet Dynamic Spider Long Tones
Spider Long Tones are a type of long tone exercise that expands from the middle of your range until you cover your full range. These are “static” long tones, meaning that they do not change notes or articulation between breaths. Trumpet Dynamic Spider Long Tones are the same static long tones, but with extreme dynamics added to them.
Static Long Tones
I do NOT typically teach my students “static long tones”. They are not as beneficial as moving long tones (flow studies). So I do not assign them for daily practice. I do however recognize certain benefits in doing these specific static long tones for some students on a temporary basis.
When my students struggle to progress in either range or tone quality (to me they are physically very similar), then I will assign these Trumpet Dynamic Spider Long Tones to help get them over the hump so to speak.
Q and A
I mentioned these exercises in my recent Q and A session and people seemed interested. So I decided to write them out and make them available.
Originally, these were not written out. Dan Fornero showed me the spider long tones when he was practicing at U.T.E.P. back in the 80’s. I have been practicing this way ever since then but not as part of my regular physical routine. In fact, my current long tones in the trumpet chops books are like a blend of what Dan showed me decades ago, the Cichowicz flow study and the Stamp exercise, all rolled into one exercise. If you are looking for something more like THAT, then we recommend one or more of the Trumpet Chops books.
Dan showed me the spider long tones by ear. Nothing was written down. I only wrote these out recently because people have been asking for them. And I don’t think I do as good a job as Dan Fornero in describing how they work.
Tone and Range
Once again, the Trumpet Dynamic Spider Long Tones are assigned to my students to help them with range and tone. They should be practiced in the music part of your day. Not the routine. They should also be done to the top of your current range.
