I composed Thanksgiving Interlude in 2015 during the week heading into the Thanksgiving weekend. I wrote it because I was feeling exceptionally blessed and wanted to express that through my music.

But you might ask, at this point, why is it so dissonant?

The piece is dissonant. So how does that express gratitude?

The most important time to be grateful is when things are not going well. I think a lot of people get that backwards. They think that gratitude only happens after all the bad stuff goes away and all you’re left with is the good stuff. That’s not how gratitude works.

Being grateful is something you choose to do and the most important time to make the choice is during times of adversity.

THAT is why this piece has so much dissonance.

Thanksgiving Interlude is what gratitude sounds like to me during times of hardship. This is not denial. Right? Denial is when you pretend the bad stuff is not there. No. This piece expresses gratitude THROUGH the hard stuff. The adversity is just as present in the composition as the gratitude.
