Rain Song is a trumpet duet from our Forty Trumpet Player Duets book. It is number ten in the book and would be extremely easy if not for the key. In the Forty Trumpet Player Duets book I tried to distribute the duets across all the keys. Rain Song trumpet duet is one of the duets that makes that happen.

For Rain Song trumpet duet, I didn’t just set out to compose a duet in a hard key. I wanted it to be something that would actually sound good in that key. The key of Db has some tuning issues for us as trumpet players, but I wanted to write something that would sound good with just a little effort.

Tonalization

It’s important to emphasize here that the Rain Song and other duets like it are part of our Tonalization system. The Tonalization concept is not only for scales. The entire point of practicing the Tonalization scale studies is to be competent at performing in every key. It make sense that learning and performing literature in the more difficult keys would be part of the Tonalization method.

That said, it is better to learn the key with the Major Scale Expansion Studies and the Tonalization Studies before you try to learn this duet.

Here are a few recommendations for working on this trumpet duet of Rain Song.

• Practice the Tonalization Studies for this key first.
• Use the third slide (or both first and third) for all low Dbs.
• Be very careful with your intonation.
