by Eddie Lewis

Pearl is a brass trio of a slightly different instrumentation. Instead of the traditional trumpet, horn and trombone, Pearl is scored for flugelhorn, horn and tuba.

Pearl could be seen as something of a sequel to my first brass trio of this instrumentation, Four Vignettes.

I composed Pearl while my wife and I were still “courting”. She was still on South Africa and I wrote this composition as a way to put into music how I see her. But that vision was expressed symbolically. I sat and charted things out before I wrote the composition. I didn’t keep the chart, so even I don’t know what parts of the song represent what aspects of Pearl’s personality, but it was fun to build the composition that way.

Skill Level

Pearl isn’t very difficult. This is especially true with the range. I went into this piece knowing that it would often be paired with the Four Vignettes and I didn’t want to make it too strenuous. The highest note in the trumpet part is B flat above the staff. There is some double tonguing, but nothing too incredibly difficult. So we are putting this at a moderate skill level. This would be a Trumpet Apprentice skill level piece which is the fourth level in our seven level system.
