Christmas Trumpet Duet

One of the difficulties in writing Christmas arrangements is in not just rewriting what you’ve already done in an earlier piece. I had written a trumpet trio arrangement of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel only a year ago and the sound of it was still ringing in my ears while I was working on this duet arrangement. In my opinion, the trio arrangement is one of the best Christmas arrangements I’ve ever written, so that makes it difficult to approach the duet with new ears.

To break loose from that previous arrangement, I dug deeply into the modus operandi behind the trumpet duets in this Trumpet Christmas Duets series. The idea is to honor the mood and the harmonies of the original Christmas carol, as presented in the Christian hymnals. The trios are not confined to this M. O. By digging into the Trumpet Christmas Duets M. O., I was able to create a new piece that stands on it’s own merits.

This O Come O Come Emmanuel trumpet duet arrangement is more peaceful than the trio arrangement. There is interplay between the melody and an arpeggiated accompaniment that gets tossed around between both parts, but this never takes away from the mood of the original hymn.

Trumpet Christmas Duet Series

This O Come O Come Emmanuel trumpet duet arrangement is the next duet in a series of Trumpet Christmas Duets. The Christmas Trumpet Duets is like part two of the Trumpet Hymn Duets series (which is now also a book). There is a very specific format behind the arrangement that I’ve adhered to for almost every duet in the series (the exception for the Christmas duets is Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence).

When we reach twenty-one of these duets, we will publish them in a book like we did with the first twenty-one Trumpet Hymn Duets. Then I will go back to writing more of the hymns again. We put our emphasis on the Christmas carols because so many people requested them.

Skill Level

In our skill level system, O Come O Come Emmanuel trumpet duet is at the Trumpet Player skill level. This is the third skill level in our system, the first of two intermediate skill levels. Most high school trumpet players should be good enough to play this arrangement.

Practice Recommendations

O Come O Come Emmanuel trumpet duet is fairly easy and can probably be sight read by most good high school students. Probably the most important things to watch out for are the intonation and phrasing.
