Beginner’s Canon Trumpet Duet is an original composition that I wrote while I was dealing with some health issues. During this time, not only was I being very careful and selective about what gigs I was taking, but I was also greatly limiting my practice range.

I decided that it was a good idea to only compose music during this time that matched the range limits of each practice day. It worked out well and I ended writing a number of beginner pieces.

Beginner’s Canon is an introduction to canonic imitation that can function as perhaps a secondary step beyond practicing “Row Row Row Your Boat”. This is a piece where the imitation is at the fourth, not a unison imitation like the famous beginner rounds.

The most important feature of this duet is that the opening statement of the theme is stated in both parts. That way, both players get to play both roles.

Trumpet Pioneer Skill Level

The most obvious aspect of the Trumpet Pioneer Skill Level is that the highest written note is written C in the staff. Beginner’s Canon Trumpet Duet follows this convention.

The Trumpet Pioneer skill level is for beginners who have only been playing trumpet for a few weeks or more. Duets like Beginner’s Canon can be used to take their trumpet education up a notch. When you have more ambitious students, they can use materials like Beginner’s Canon to improve their musical minds while they are waiting for their chops to develop.

That said, beginner’s Canon Trumpet Duet may not be sight readable for students of this skill level. Our skill levels are based on practiced results, not sight reading. So, this is also a wonderful opportunity to teach the students effective practice techniques.

Practice Suggestions

Here are a few recommendations for working on Beginner’s Canon Trumpet Duet.

• Practice the first part together, in unison first.
• Then practice the second part together, in unison.
• Then put the two parts together.
• Be careful to count rests properly.
