Baby Jesus I Love You Brass Trio
for Trumpet, Trombone and Tuba
By Eddie Lewis
This is an original composition that I wrote while I was writing Christmas arrangements for my brass trio. It has a tropical island flavor to it and is reminiscent of a Christmas song from my childhood (for which I cannot recall the name).
We performed it on a gig in 2023 playing Christmas music for the people entering the famous Nutcracker Market, here in Houston, Texas. The video below is from that gig. We had Dave Kirk on Tuba, Ryan Rongone on Trombone and myself on Trumpet.
I performed salsa for almost twenty years when I first moved to Houston. That rhythm is now a part of my musical character. A very large percentage of my compositions and arrangements have elements of salsa in them.
The same is true for Baby Jesus I Love You. The salsa hints are subtle, but they are there.
Baby Jesus I Love You – The Story
Baby Jesus I Love You is genuinely a Christmas song. I didn’t just write a bunch of notes and then declare, arbitrarily, that it was a Christmas song.
I’ve been steadily writing Christmas arrangements for over thirty years now. If you include my Unadorned Trumpet Carols album (with 49 simple Christmas carol duets), then I have written well over a hundred Christmas arrangements in that time. I’ve also composed a number of Christmas originals, including my Noel Suite and Sleep Now for trumpet trio.
Baby Jesus I Love You was conceived in my mind while I was writing other brass trio Christmas arrangements for the Nutcracker Market gig. It has lyrics that tell a story about Mary holding the baby Jesus, singing softly to him about his future.
While I was writing it, I would hit the playback on the computer and dance around the room to the tune. It’s a happy song. It’s simple, but very happy.
Trumpet Pro Skill Level
Baby Jesus I Love You is at an advanced level, mostly because of the range. In my system of skill levels, this is the fifth of seven levels and we call it the Trumpet Pro Skill Level.
The trombone and tuba parts are slightly more difficult than the trumpet part.
The highest note in the trumpet part is written C sharp. The highest note in the trombone part is written B. The highest note in the tuba is fourth space G.
There are some syncopated rhythms, but musicians with the range to play Baby Jesus I Love You should have no problems with these simple rhythms.
Baby Jesus, I Love You Brass Trio Play Along Video
There is no play-along file for Baby Jesus I Love You simply because the recording was made live.
Baby Jesus, I Love You Brass Trio Demo Video
Here is a demo video of our Baby Jesus I Love You Brass Trio. This was recorded at the gig for which I wrote the piece, a Nutcracker Market in Houston, Texas. The musicians are myself, Ryan Rongone on Trombone and Dave Kirk on Tuba.
