When the Joy of the Lord Kicks In is my final composition of 2020. Over the past several years, most of my compositions have been uplifting and joyous. When the country (and the world) went into lockdown, my writing took a darker turn. In 2020 I began writing more dissonant music again, music that wasn’t as uplifting. I was writing music that expressed my frustration. But when the year was coming to a close, I decided I didn’t want to end 2020 on that same dark note, and I spent the last few days of the year writing When the Joy of the Lord Kicks In.
Skill Level
The skill level of When the Joy of the Lord Kicks In is intermediate/advanced. In our seven skill level system, this is a Trumpet Apprentice skill level, which is the fourth level of the seven. The highest note in the piece is B flat above the staff. That said, there are a lot of those B flats. There are fifteen of them, so if B flat is at the edge of your range, then this is going to be a tough piece to play.
The most difficult aspect of When the Joy of the Lord Kicks In is tricky fingerings. The composition utilizes an original compositional technique I invented in the 90’s to be used with brass quintet pieces. That technique is notorious for creating inner parts with crazy, awkward fingerings.
The good news is that awkward fingerings are easily overcome with proper practice. That’s why we are not putting this composition at the next higher level.
