This book has been a long time coming…
I began recording my Unadorned Trumpet Hymn series in 2013, published the recordings as an album in 2016 and then began posting video versions of the hymns on YouTube not long after that. That series has been surprisingly popular. So much so, that people have been asking for the sheet music since the very beginning.
I wish I could simply say, “And this book is that sheet music!”, but I can’t.
Unadorned Hymn Duets is based on the Unadorned Trumpet Hymn series, but also includes improvements. For example, many of my original Unadorned Trumpet Hymn recordings only had second parts during the refrains. I spent many hours adding second parts to the rest of the hymns. I also changed some of the older second parts to match some better conventions I learned over the past ten years.
That means that this book, Unadorned Hymn Duets, is BETTER than my original series. These are new and improved hymn arrangements that I invested a great deal of time and effort into. Inside the book I say that it is “my gift of service to you”.
Not Well
The assembling and editing of Unadorned Hymn Duets was all done during a time when I couldn’t do much of anything else, due to my health. In fact, I am typing this now while sitting with a great deal of pain. I have the rough draft of the cover open on the top screen and this Tiger Music form open on the bottom screen. This helps me focus on my purpose and the reason why I’m publishing these hymns in book form.
And yes, I guess you could call this Unadorned Hymn Duets part of my “ministry”. I don’t typically think that way. I see myself as a business owner who honors God in the way I operate that business. And yes, there is overlap between what a lot of people would call works of ministry.
My point is that it’s a lot easier to endure the tough, painfilled times when my sights are set on the cross!
When I am healed and can later look back at these times, I will always associate this season with this Unadorned Hymn Duets book.
What are Unadorned Hymn Duets?
Unadorned Hymn Duets are melodies from the original hymns with complimentary harmony parts. The harmonies are not just taken from the alto part, which always sounds awkward. Instead, the harmonies in the second part are derived from the harmonic structure of the original hymn.
