Trinity Fanfare is a Christian themed trumpet quartet with modern harmonies. The piece is personally significant to me because it’s one of the first compositions I wrote after getting out of the hospital. This fanfare was my way of putting music to the words, “Praise the Father, Praise the Son, Praise the Holy Ghost.”

My health situation was one of those “you don’t know how sick you are until it’s over” kind of things. Now that I know what I know, I now realize that I had grown gradually more ill over a period of five years or more. By the time I checked into the emergency room last year, all my composition and publishing efforts had come to a standstill.

Add to that the complication of my music software of choice pulling itself off the market. I had to learn a new software, after using the same engraving software for several decades. Trinity Fanfare Trumpet Quartet is one of the very first pieces I’ve written in that new software. I began learning Dorico when I was still in the hospital.

Trinity Fanfare Trumpet Quartet celebrates God’s love for us! I didn’t understand until long after I was out of the hospital just how close I had come to dying. I am alive now only because of God’s grace and mercy. Halleluia! This fanfare is meant to be my celebration of this fact. It is my musical gratitude sourced from what I hear as “my voice”. It is dissonant, but not overly so.

Trumpet Pro Skill Level

Even though the Trinity Fanfare Trumpet Quartet is short (only eight measures), the skill level is advanced according to our seven level system. It’s not just the range, which only really has a few notes above the staff. It’s the advanced harmonies and the rhythms and the overall stylistic context.

We have three advanced skill levels. The Trumpet Pro Skill Level is the first of those three advanced skill levels. The most obvious aspect of the Trumpet Pro Skill Level is that it covers a range up to High C. In the case of Trinity Fanfare Trumpet Quartet, the highest note is B natural above the staff.

Practice Suggestions

I always recommend performing music that is within your skill level. This was a lesson taught to me by a wonderful band director when I was still teaching private lessons in the schools. Before I worked with him (I apologize for not remembering his name), the prevailing attitude was to choose music for the students that was just out of their reach. The idea was to use the music as a way to motivate them to improve.

Instead, this band director instructed me to choose music that was just within the students’ skill levels. His reasoning had to do with positive vs. negative music experiences. But now that I’ve been teaching this way for several decades, I know that there is far more benefit to it than just that.

So yes, I recommend that you only work on Trinity Fanfare Trumpet Quartet if it is already within your skill level. This includes, in the case of this piece, the range and the rhythms.
