Description
The Calling
33 Unaccompanied Trumpet Solos
THE CALLING, a compendium of over thirty original compositions for unaccompanied trumpet, is a musical journey like no other. Representing more than two decades of composition, these trumpet solos are presented in chronological order. As a unified work, the pieces in THE CALLING tell a story. It is a story of faith, of friendship, and of sincere admiration. THE CALLING begins with Lewis’ first unaccompanied trumpet solo, We Shall See, composed in the mid 90’s. It ends with a series of inspiring teacher tributes. Each of the solos in THE CALLING can be used as both a performance piece and lesson study material. THE CALLING is not, however, an etude book. It is an ambitious anthology of bold and captivating original performance pieces for the unaccompanied trumpet.
Skill Level
There are 33 unaccompanied trumpet solos in this ebook ranging in skill from intermediate to advanced. Using our skill level system, this book covers the Trumpet Player, Trumpet Apprentice, Trumpet Pro and Trumpet Master skill levels.
On the easier end, there are unaccompanied trumpet solos with a range up to G above the staff and relatively simple rhythms, time signatures and key signatures.
On the more difficult end, we have Eddie Lewis’ unaccompanied trumpet solo titled The Lord’s Prayer, which is a sixteen page, seven movement feat of virtuosity. While some of The Lord’s Prayer’s movements are not as difficult, taken as a whole, it is safely within our Trumpet Master skill level.

Some of these unaccompanied trumpet solos are available as individual sheet music, independently of The Calling book. Other’s have been “orchestrated” for larger instrumentations.
There’s a funny story related to Eddie’s ability to orchestrate unaccompanied pieces into working larger ensembles. Even though Eddie stopped working to become an orchestral trumpet player, he never stopped working on his classical playing. And in that light, he has remained active as a brass quintet player in the Houston area.
One of the leaders who Eddie works with heard that he was orchestrating one of his original etudes for brass quintet and the leader was simply not interested. It was months later, when the leader attended a reading of a bunch of Eddie Lewis’ brass quintet compositions when that leader expressed his surprise! How does a boring old trumpet etude turn into a piece of music like this?
Ha ha!
When you understand Eddie’s compositional technique and the process he follows to create music, it makes sense that he can take a “boring old trumpet etude” and make it sing in an ensemble setting!
Eddie uses a system of composition that “grows” the music from what he calls “seeds”. There is very little difference between Eddie’s composition process and how a plant grows.
The Calling Demo Video
We do have a demo video for The Calling. Unfortunately, the background music is missing from the video. For that reason, we are also going to post here links to some of the solos.
