Eddie Lewis has a free improvisation video series on his YouTube channel. The melody from Seven & Ten comes from video number 17 from that series.
When Eddie does the free improvisation videos, the objective is to just sit and play whatever comes out. There is nothing pre-planned. Nothing preconceived. He often doesn’t even know what will come out of the bell when he starts that first note.
That’s how Seven & Ten was born. This trumpet quintet arrangement of the original improvisation sticks to the melody 99% of the way. He did add a counter melody at one point and added a final chord at the end, just to make the arrangement work. But other than that, all of the material comes straight from the original improvisation.
