Peace

by Eddie Lewis

I wrote Peace on one of my trips to South Africa. It was probably one of my earlier trips because the old title used to be “Peace in P.E.”, P.E. being the abbreviation for Port Elizabeth (now officially called Gqeberha). I haven’t spent any significant time in Port Elizabeth since my third trip to South African (I’ve done six or seven now).

Peace is not really a swing ballad. And it’s not Latin. It’s not rock. I think it would work with an ECM feel, but that’s not what I hear in my head for this song. It should almost be a starting off point for free improv…except, free improv with a tonal center…hinting towards these changes.

That said, you can do it any style that sounds appropriate to you. I recently wrote a classical trumpet version that isn’t “free”. So, if I can do it some “other way”, then you can, too.
