Description
Paid to Play Trumpet Duet
Paid to Play trumpet duet is one of the most enjoyable duets in our Forty Trumpet Player duets book. It has almost a Latin feel to it, but it never stops being in a classical style.
Having made a major part of my income playing Salsa gigs in the 90’s, there is a lot of that clave rhythm in most of my writing. There are hints of that rhythm in Paid to Play trumpet duet.
Paid to Play is four pages long and I read it from my iPad with a foot pedal page turner to record the video. Four pages is just a little out of character for the Trumpet Player skill level, but we didn’t want to exclude this very happy duet for only the length.
Paid to Play Brass Quintet
An interesting side note, when I was working on Paid to Play as a trumpet duet, I decided to add a tuba part, only so I could hear the chord changes as I worked. Well, the longer I worked with that instrumentation, the more I wanted to keep the tuba.
That’s when I decided I would expand Paid to Play into a brass quintet composition. I finished the piece as a brass quintet piece and then went back to the trumpet parts to make them work as a duet again. So we have two versions of Paid to Play.
If you are interested in the brass quintet version, please let us know. We won’t be officially publishing it until I can make a live recording.

Trumpet Player Skill Level
Paid to Play trumpet duet, as are all the duets in our 40 Trumpet Player Duets book, are in our Trumpet Player skill level. The most obvious characteristic of this skill level is that the top note is G (or G sharp) above the staff.
Played at the written tempo, the Paid to Play trumpet duet will need to be practiced. That said, there is nothing in the duet that would bar an intermediate player from successfully performing it.
