O Jesus My Savior Beginner Trumpet Trio is in some regards a very simple piece. The melody is very simple. The harmonies are also very simple.
Where it begins to be less simple is with textural qualities of the piece. O Jesus My Savior is like a sostenuto hymn. There are some emphasized dissonances, but they resolve wonderfully and create and very interesting meditative composition.
I know I’ve said this about several of our beginner trumpet ensembles, but it is just as true for O Jesus My Savior as all the rest. I never publish a beginner piece that I wouldn’t be proud to have as a recording on one of my albums. When performed by pros, O Jesus My Savior can be a very beautiful, calming, peaceful composition.
When I write beginner music, I try to keep the creativity at the same level as what I write for the other skill levels. The only difference is how I “skill limit” during the writing process. I am always aware of the boundaries and I almost never “color outside those lines”.
As with many of my compositions, the title comes from the melody. I almost always name the piece after it has already been composed. This trumpet trio was nameless until I clicked the playback button one last time after working on it to completion. That’s when I heard the words, “O Jesus My Savior”.
Does that make it religious?
Well, in a sense, all of my compositions are religious. But the title, in my mind, isn’t any more religious than any of my other pieces. Those were the words I heard in my mind’s ear. That’s what I went with.
Trumpet Pioneer Skill Level
The Trumpet Pioneer Skill Level is our lowest of seven trumpet skill levels. It has many limitations placed upon it in order to make the music accessible to trumpet students who have been playing for a few months or less.
The range is limited to written C in the staff. The time signatures are limited to 4/4, 3/4 and 2/4. The note values are limited to Whole Notes, Half Notes and Quarter Notes.
I try to compose a lot of music for this skill level because the published pieces do not follow my same guidelines for this. And I need the music for my students.
Practice Suggestions
Here are a few recommendations for working on this trumpet trio of O Jesus My Savior.
- Learn to play long phrases and hold your breath for longer than what feels comfortable.
- Intonation will make or break this piece.
- Balance is important. Learn what that is and how to do it.
- This sounds best with legato tongue.
