King Porter Stomp for Little Big Band
By Jelly-Roll Morton
Arr. Eddie Lewis
If I’m not mistaken, King Porter Stomp was the first chart I wrote for Ben Pokluda for our Jazz Forever project. Jazz Forever was a band, lead by Ben, with me as it’s music director. I wrote ALL the charts for the band (over 120 charts) and MCed the concerts and produced the five recordings.
This chart is an arrangement based on a Bob Crosby transcription. King Porter Stomp is one of those tunes that keeps resurfacing every time the jazz style gets a new facelift. The Bob Crosby treatment was one of the first to begin this tradition. I think it’s from the 1940’s.
This piece is very exciting. The opening riff in the saxes with the rhythmic trumpet solo over the top is akin to a majestic fanfare, drawing the audience’s attention to the band before the tune gets underway.
The entire piece is a joy for those who love fast, syncopated rhythms. I think in the good ol’ days we would have called this a “barn burner”.
Trumpet Pro Skill Level
The Trumpet Pro Skill Level is basically what it sounds like. This is a professional level arrangement. You could do it with a college ensemble or a very, very good high school group, but it really is meant for professional players.
