Amazing Grace Beginner Trumpet Duet
John Newton,
Edwin O. Excell
Arr. bBy Eddie Lewis
The motivation to write this arrangement came to me when I finished our Unadorned Hymn Duets book and I realized that it did not include Amazing Grace. I don’t know how that one slipped through the cracks. I even went back and searched my older videos. I never made an Unadorned Trumpet Hymns version of the song.
I was all set to make that video and publish this arrangement separately when I went into the hospital the first of two times (in six weeks). That six weeks between the two emergency room visits were brutal and I didn’t get much of anything done, besides publishing the Unadorned Hymn Duets book (which was almost done by that time anyway).
Now that I am well again (Praise God!), I can start the recordings back up and get this backlog of trumpet compositions published, finally.
And I feel like it’s important that I get this one posted right away because the timing of it is so relevant to my current story. Three weeks ago I was so weak that I had to splice two verses of a hymn together or not post the video at all. I didn’t have the strength or the breath to do two verses in a row…live.
That’s why we stopped posting new trumpet compositions. I simply could not make the recordings of those pieces because my health was so bad.
So posting this Amazing Grace Beginner Trumpet Duet is my way of celebrating God’s goodness. I celebrate His grace in my life today. Praise God!!!
Trumpet Pioneer Skill Level
The Trumpet Pioneer Skill Level is our lowest of seven trumpet skill levels. It has many limitations placed upon it in order to make the music accessible to trumpet students who have been playing for a few months or less.
The range is limited to written C in the staff. The time signatures are limited to 4/4, 3/4 and 2/4. The note values are limited to Whole Notes, Half Notes and Quarter Notes.
I try to compose a lot of music for this skill level because the published pieces do not follow my same guidelines for this. And I need the music for my students.
For this Amazing Grace Beginner Trumpet Duet I included two versions of the song. The first version strictly follows our Trumpet Pioneer Skill Level. The second version adds eighth-notes to make it sound like the original hymn.
Amazing Grace is one of the songs I have my absolute beginners learn, but we do it in a lower key, in four-four time signature and with no eighth-notes. This version is a stepping-stone between that and the actual hymn.
Practice Suggestions
Here are a few recommendations for working on this Amazing Grace Beginner Trumpet Duet.
- Listen to the original hymn twenty times so you know what it sounds like.
- When you practice sections of the song, repeat everything ten times before you move on.
