Description
Hermit’s Dance Supreme Trumpet Duet
Hermit’s Dance Supreme is a trumpet duet in the cakewalk style featuring chromatic melodies throughout. It is a composition that I wrote specifically to challenge trumpet students with chromatic fingerings. The addition of syncopated rhythms makes it extra fun to work on, and audiences can enjoy it, too, if you ever decide to perform it.
The Title
The image I see in my head is a man all alone in the wilderness, dancing freely, knowing that no one is watching. This is a man who can use any body movement, no matter how odd it may look to people in civilization. He is free to dance how he wishes… and he does.
The movie Cast Away (featuring Tom Hanks) comes to mind. Not everything about living a secluded life is dreadful. When delighted about an accomplishment, a survivor can express that delight in any manner he wishes. How would you be dancing after finally catching supper, the twentieth time trying?
I used to have a beautiful friend who was a trumpet player and a band leader named Calvin Owens. He’s probably one of the most famous people to call me a friend. He used to tell me that he loves how I always let it “all hang out”. I want people to hear that same sense of abandon in this trumpet duet as Calvin used to hear in my musical expressions.

Don’t forget that trumpet duets are a legitimate performing ensemble. Some of my favorite gigs from my long, successful performing career have been trumpet duet gigs. These are not easy gigs… not on the chops. There’s not a lot of rest in trumpet duets, compared to larger ensembles. But they are some of the best playing you will ever do in public. So the fatigue is well worth it.
Trumpet Player Skill Level
Hermit’s Dance Supreme trumpet duet, as are all the duets in our 40 Trumpet Player Duets book, are in our Trumpet Player skill level. The most obvious characteristic of this skill level is that the top note is G (or G sharp) above the staff.
Performed at tempo, the chromatic fingerings in this trumpet duet can be a bit of a finger twister. It’s important to remember that when you perform my music, the suggested tempi are only listed as “ideal”. Perform my compositions at whatever tempi work for you.
