He Keeps Me Singing
Luther B. Bridgers
Arr. Eddie Lewis
He Keeps Me Singing is number 18 in our Trumpet Hymn Duet series. This one breaks the mold a little bit because I wrote the second verse in a swing style. Not a jazzy swing style, mind you. It’s a swing style that is common for these late 19th century hymns.
Because I am a jazz composer (too, one of my many hats), I was very careful about not writing the arrangement in a way that made it sound jazzy. I have sung and have heard this swing style in church for many, many years. That’s the sound I was looking for.
The Trumpet Hymn Duets are designed to be 100% appropriate for traditional church services. Because I set out with that as my objective, these hymns are now being performed all over the world. I happen to have proof of this thanks to the Covid-19 hysteria. Churches from around the world are contacting me to tell me they are using my Trumpet Hymn Duet arrangements in their streamed services. The contact me for permission.
