A Theme for Gardeners is a trumpet duet from our Forty Trumpet Player Duets book. It is one of the most beautiful duets I’ve ever written and compliments the book wonderfully.

The main melodic theme from the duet came to me as an inspiration, as most of my musical ideas do. These inspirations “come to me unbidden” while I am going about my day. I do not TRY to come up with interesting material. The melodies come to me. I call those “inspirations”.

Where the creativity comes in is when I sit to write the pieces. I try to be creative in a way that honors the original inspiration. I do it that way because I believe these inspirations come from God. So I try to stay true to the mood and style of the original idea.

In Recovery

When I first recorded A Theme for Gardeners, I was so I’ll that I could not complete a single pass through either part. My kidneys were in bad shape and it had affected my breathing. I went several months in early 2024 not publishing any new music because I couldn’t make the demo recordings.

I am happy to say that those days are behind me. Praise God! And Thank you Jesus!

I am typing this after having finished the recording and video. It is my first one (aside from some easy recordings I did to test the waters) of these demos I’ve done since I got sick. I can’t tell you how happy I am to be able to get back to work again.

The Title

The title for A Theme for Gardeners comes directly from the rhythm of the melody. Sometimes when I don’t have a good title, I take the title from lyrics that COULD be applied to the melody. In this case, “A Theme for Gardeners”.

I will say that I have been gardening my entire life to various degrees. In Houston this is difficult because we have clay soil and extremely hot and humid summers. But we find a way to make it work.

Often times the inspirations I receive are while I am out working in our garden.
