For Eight Trumpets
by Eddie Lewis
This short fanfare is one of my earliest works for trumpet ensemble. I wrote it for
the Texas Brass Herald Trumpets in preparation for a gig that I ended up not
doing. So the piece was never performed. It sat on my hard drive for decades.
I wiped the cobwebs off in 2015 to be used as the opening music for our new
trumpet instructional video series. I recorded all eight parts and you can hear my
recording of it in any of our instructional videos at http://www.EddieLewis.com
when they are made available.
The piece is short but jam packed with harmonic richness. It utilizes chromatic
harmonies in a mixolydian tonal framework. It has double tongue rhythms and
perfect fifth motifs. So it is a modern fanfare that actually sounds like a fanfare.
The final chord of the fanfare is a G13 with a sharp 11. It puts the first trumpet on a high G (fourth ledger line above the staff) and a tritone C sharp in the second part. For this reason, the composition is intended for college level or professional trumpet players.
