Three Days is a musical depiction of the three days Jesus spent in Hell between the time He died on the cross and the time He arose again.
The harmonic language of this work is based on a twelve-tone technique Eddie Lewis invented called Spider Chords. It is a revolutionary new technique which follows all the traditional rules associated with twelve-tone, serial composition, but gives the composer a melodic freedom that has never been possible before. When Lewis invented this new harmonic language, he exclaimed, “I have tamed the twelve-tone monster!”
The new harmonic language is aptly suited for the subject of this composition. The low brass trio serves as a musical metaphor: conquering the twelve-tone in the same way that Jesus wrestled the keys of hell from satan.
This composition was originally written for, and performed by, Consort Immanuel in their Sacred Brass Concert in 2007.
