Quick Warm-Up

Five Minutes

This is a very short version of a warm-up based on the Physical Trumpet Pyramid. It can be completed in under five minutes. I have used similar warm-ups for the past three decades. They touch on every level of the pyramid structure but in a much abbreviated manner.

Not a Routine

It is important to understand that this is not a routine. It is a warm-up based on the same concept used to design the routines in the Daily Routines and the Chops Express books.
Trumpet players who practice the Physical Trumpet Pyramid based routines do not typically need to warm-up.

The routines have warm-ups built into them. This short version of the pyramid structure is to be used only when you cannot find time to do a complete routine. Instead of skipping the routine completely, do this quick warmup to avoid the types of problems that can creep into your trumpet playing when you don’t warm-up.

Relax!

If you are doing this warm-up as a Daily Routines or Chops Express user, it is most likely because you don’t have time to do a full routine. In those situations where you are in a hurry, it is important to relax and take your time while you do the warm-up. That’s one of the reasons why we do the shorter version instead of trying to squeeze the other routines into a shorter amount of time. We want to be able to cover all the same bases but without the anxiety that accompanies last minute panic situations. So relax. Breathe normal. Breathe deep. Slow down and focus.

Instructions:

  • No. 1 Lip Buzz – Buzz any single note and hold it. Try to hold it for at least ten seconds. The objective is to hold it steady with no changes in pitch or tone.
  • No. 2 Lip Buzz – Improvise a buzzed melody and end on a long note.
  • No. 3 Mouthpiece Buzz - Buzz any single note and hold it. Try to hold it for at least ten seconds. The objective is to hold it steady with no changes in pitch or tone.
  • No. 4 Mouthpiece Buzz – Improvise a buzzed melody and end on a long note.
  • No. 5 Long Tones – Play slowly.
    • Remember, just because you have less time to practice does not mean you have to rush through everything.
    • Bend the second note.
    • Breathe and remove the mouthpiece from your lips between phrases.
  • Nos 6 – 10 Expansion Flow Studies – Slur. Play these studies slowly and smoothly. Rest a few seconds between each exercise.
  • Nos 11 - 12 Flexibility Exercises – Do these slurred interval studies instead of lip slurs. Play them slowly and deliberately. Pause between phrases and take the horn off of your lips.
  • Nos 13 – 15 Articulation – Play these slowly and deliberately.
  • No. 16 Double Tongue – Just a taste of double tonguing to top off the warm-up.

Now you are ready to play your horn.
