This is a six minute brass quintet work based on the very first brass quintet arrangement Mr. Lewis ever wrote for his first ensemble, the Bravado Brass Quintet.
In the mid 1980's, Lewis wrote a simple arrangement of Tchaickovsky's piano piece called Morning Prayer. His brass quintet ended up performing it at various functions, continuing to do so long after he left El Paso to study trumpet in Chicago, Pittsburgh and finally Houston.
Eventually the original parts were lost and Lewis did not have a copy.
Later, in an effort to compile all of his religious works for brass quintet, Mr. Lewis made an anouncement via facebook and the original parts were found again.
(His original arrangement is currently available as a free download on this website.)
When he recieved the original parts once again, Mr. Lewis decided his next composition project would be to compose a theme and variations based on the simple piano work. This is that composition.
There are five variations, each of which features a different musician in the quintet.
