Feathered Friends is an trumpet solo for beginning players. Here is what Mr. Lewis has to say about his composition:
As a teacher, I work with students of all ages and levels. I’ve been teaching absolute beginners since the mid 1980’s with great success. My overall pedagogical concept for the youngest students centers on congruency with the more advanced students. There is no difference between the way I teach absolute beginners and the way I teach the pros. The pros work on long tones, so do the beginners. The pros work on triple tongue, so do the beginners.
The same is true for practicing performance literature. I believe very strongly that all trumpet players should be practicing performance literature. This is as true for the beginners as it is for the pros. Unfortunately, the availability of published trumpet solos that meet my very specific criteria for beginners is greatly limited.
The music for students at the “Pioneer Level” (the first level in my system) should not have more than one sharp or flat in the key signature, should not utilize any rhythms smaller in value than quarter notes, should not go beyond C in the staff and should not have any time signatures outside of 2/4, 3/4 or 4/4.
I continue to search for solos that fit these criteria. I want my students to have more literature to choose from, but until I do find more, I have composed three solos of different keys and different time signatures. The titles of these three solos include, The Bird March (key of C), The Purple Parrot (key of G) and Feathered Friends (key of F).
These solos are easy enough to be performed by students who have only been playing trumpet for a few months. The first student to learn these solos was an eight year old girl who performed them at her school only months after she began learning how to play the trumpet. Because she had access to literature she could perform at that early stage of her progress, the beginning of her trumpet career was a complete one. I believe this is one of the reasons why she developed such a strong passion for the instrument and music in general.
