“Four Parables" for unaccompanied trumpet was inspired by four of the parables that Jesus told. The first movement uses various rhythm groups to create an almost dreamy theme that seems to shift in and out of reality. The second movement is slow and unfolding. The grace notes couple with the sixteenth notes, giving this movement a flavor that hints at Eastern or even American Indian sounds. It is a simple melody with an entirely unique sound. The third movement is almost impatient. The compound time signature gives room for a play between 12/8 and 3/4 which accents the melody with a certain degree of agitation. The last movement is fast and creates the sensation of being on the edge of flying out of control as one performs it. The fourth movement is the most impressive of the movements, yet is not nearly as difficult to learn as it might appear.
The work is intended for use by musicians at advanced high school level and higher. It is interesting to note that the composer wrote these movements while waiting for his high school students to arrive at lessons, and composed specifically with the students in mind. Most standard unaccompanied trumpet works are inaccessible to younger players because of the complexity of these pieces. Lewis set out to address this need for unaccompanied works for young musicians and produced a piece that is not only accessible to high school musicians, but still challenging enough to remain interesting to professionals.
"Four Parables" is appropriate for recitals, college auditions, scholarship auditions, and solo contests.
